Our Story


In August 2017 Crystal Valley Tech was formed by a group of people from the Technology Industry in Waterford and Waterford Institute of Technology. Crystal Valley Tech’s mission is to Promote and Support Technology in Waterford and the South East.

CVT is a community of innovative, like minded companies committed to driving development and growth within the ICT industry in the South East, promoting a regional reputation as a location of choice for the front runners in leading edge technology development.

In addition to influencing Local/Regional and National Policies we plan to have working groups to support our mission. We will host regular events that cultivate a Tech Community that everyone will benefit from.

Willie Donnelly – WIT

Professor Willie Donnelly is President of Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT). He is founder of the Telecommunications Software and Systems Group (TSSG) a global leader in mobile services research and innovation. Prior to entering academia, he worked for 15 years in the telecommunications and utilities industries.

Professor Donnelly’s main research interest is in communications management with particular emphasis on autonomic network management, bio-inspired network management, internet of things (IoT) and nano communications techniques and the challenges of managing the future internet. He has over 25 years of experience in developing and managing international research and innovation projects in collaboration with over 340 industry and academia partners. He has generated more than 100 Million Euro in research funding and, as an entrepreneur, he is the founder of a number of spin-out companies including FeedHenry which was acquired by Red Hat in 2014.

 Larry Breen – Routematch

Larry is Vice President of Routematch Software Ltd. Larry Breen brings a wealth of experience in creating market leading customer engagement tools centred on payments and fare collection technologies. As Vice President of Product, Larry is responsible for the strategic direction, global development and delivery of the Routematch suite of products, designed to cater to customer’s current and future technological advancements and transportation needs. As a serial entrepreneur and business executive, Larry has worked in a wide range of business environments, including a number of start-ups. He was a visionary in setting up the Routematch Research & Development centre in Waterford in 2015 which has seen 35 new jobs created and is steadily growing. Larry is passionate about getting the most value out of everything he engages in from life, relationships, business and investments and enjoy those around him to do likewise.

Elaine Fennelly – Bluefin

Elaine’s extensive involvement over the years in the ICT sector in the South East makes her an ideal Board member of Crystal Valley Tech. Having been involved in EI and IDA companies at both Board and Management level – Elaine also sits on the the New Frontiers Panel in Waterford as the Industry Representative and has been on the IBYE (Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur) judging panel in Waterford for several years.

​Having set up Bluefin Payment Systems’ first European Office in 2015, ​Elaine was Managing Director of this Multinational ​Payments Company for 3 years. Elaine’s previous finance and management roles are varied and her experience ranges from small start-ups to the largest of multinationals in many sectors – Manufacturing, IT, Healthcare and Consulting. She has been involved in founding companies, raising finance and performing due diligence right through to company acquisition. In addition to working for Intel, GSK, Fujitsu​, Red Hat and Bausch and Lomb, Elaine has worked as CFO for over 14 years in EI Tech Companies including Waterford Technologies and Feedhenry.

Ciarán Cullen – ArcLabs

Ciarán Cullen has extensive experience in developing businesses through mentoring, funding and incubation assistances from early stage concepts through to high growth start ups in his roles as Chief Executive Officer of Waterford City Enterprise Board, Chair of the LEO National IT Committee and as Managing Director of Waterford City Enterprise Centre. He has worked with a broad range of business models which fulfil varied customer needs in a range of sectors including ICT, Pharmaceutical, medical product, food and drink production, engineering etc. He also assists the development and enhancement of the entrepreneurial spirit and skills among the students and staff in WIT.

Donna Tilson – Sunlife

Donna is the Director of Data Insights at Sun Life Financial. After joining the company in 2001, she has held various different roles throughout the IT organisation including Quality Assurance, Client Server development, Web development and most recently Business Analytics solutions – with a particular focus on big data technologies and Customer experience insights. She has a keen interest in education around IT roles and the promotion of IT in the South East.

Pat Bruen – SE2

Pat trained as an accountant with KPMG in Dublin before joining Nortel Networks in Galway. Pat took on progressively more senior roles within Nortel in London and Frankfurt. After 5 years in Germany as Finance Controller of Nortel’s European Data Networks division Pat returned to Ireland to be part of the team setting up the European sales, marketing and R&D operation in Wexford for AngioDynamics, a US medical device company. He was the Operations and Finance Leader that established the Sun Life Financial operation in Waterford in 1998. In 2013 he managed the de-merger of some of Sun Life’s Waterford operations into Delaware Limited. In 2015 he managed the transition of the company and its team of 100 software engineers into SE2 Ireland Limited, a subsidiary of SE2 LLC, a USA company which provides technology solutions to USA life and annuity industry.
